To cum or not to cum, that is the question...
Today in between my SMSes with my old pals from school who were planning a gathering at one of the girls' place, I got this SMS:
" M & S cannot cum, how about you? "
...erm...not sure about you, but i seriously didn't know what to reply...i guess the word "cum" just...erm was a bit raw for me esp in this SMS...and i understand most singaporeans like to use it mostly in the context below:
Cum [preposition]
with; combined with; along with (usually used in combination): My garage-cum-workshop is well equipped.
I guess after being in the United States for so long, I am used to how it's been used in the US (and Europe too...actually in many countries!!)...just can't help it...
Cum [noun]
Slang: Vulgar, sexual pornographic context...
In my opinion, I thought this context is quite globally understood, perhaps people should take care when using this word, you know what i mean...much embarrassment could be avoided. How should i present my case to my friend, who, in my terms, is still very sheltered from such vocabulary.

If you don't mind my saying, most people here actually do know the meaning of 'cumming' in the orgasmic sense as in 'Oh God, I'm cumming, yes!'. However, 'cumming' is widely used here in SMSs instead of 'coming' because (1) they are trying to be naughty and (2) It's acceptable to use it between friends. Most of the time, they are nonchalant not because they are ignorant of the meaning but because it's often used betwn friends. Maybe you should have replied :'I can help M & S' just to see if she really knew the meaning!
ha thanks for your insight :) you are fun, however my friends in that particular group is a little, if i may, uptight and of another planet. so, better not ruin my 20 odd years of relationship with them :)
